FERGUS FALLS -- The ROCORI Spartans football team is moving on in the Section 8-4A playoffs after taking home a road victory in the opening round of the section playoffs on Tuesday night.
The Spartans took down Fergus Falls 14-7 to advance to the Section 8-4A semifinals on Saturday.
ROCORI was the first team to get on the board in the game, courtesy of a one-yard touchdown run from Luke Humbert in the first quarter. Although the two-point conversion was not successful, the Spartans jumped out to an early 6-0 on the road against the Otters.
With ROCORI carrying a 6-0 lead into halftime after a sound first half, Fergus Falls jumped out in front in the third quarter to take a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With a little over five minutes left in the game, the Spartans regained the lead after forcing an Otters turnover. Chris Clark was on the receiving end of a 10-yard touchdown pass from Camdyn Bauer, followed up by a successful two-point conversion, to give ROCORI a 14-7 edge.
With the game on the line in the final seconds, the Spartans were able to get some key stop capped off by an interception to seal the victory.
Humbert paced the way for the ROCORI offense with 116 yards rushing on 27 carries, along with a touchdown. Bauer added 38 yards passing and 60 yards rushing, while Clark had one catch for 10 yards and a touchdown and Andrew Anderson had one catch for 17 yards.
Defensively, Jeremy Hennen had 5.5 tackles, while Caleb Schouviller and Isaac Massmann each added five tackles. Anderson recorded the interception for the Spartans defense.
ROCORI will advance to face No. 1 Detroit Lakes in the Section 8-4A semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday in Detroit Lakes. The winner will advance to the Section 8-4A championship game at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in Alexandria.
