COLD SPRING -- The ROCORI Spartans football team kicked off the 2019 high school football season on the right foot on Thursday night.
The Spartans shut out the Fergus Falls Otters 23-0 in the season opener on Thursday in Cold Spring.
ROCORI opened up the game by jumping out to an early 8-0 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a 13-yard touchdown run from Brady Linn.
With about a minute remaining in the second quarter, Drew Schneider recovered a fumble in the end zone to push the Spartans’ lead to 16-0 heading into halftime.
Jack Steil rounded out ROCORI’s scoring in the victory with a seven-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to stretch the score to 23-0.
Steil finished with 135 yards rushing and threw for nearly 100 yards to lead the way at quarterback for the Spartans. Andrew Anderson ended the game with four catches for 83 yards.
ROCORI’s defense held Fergus Falls to just 120 total yards in the game, led by Dawson Schmitz with five tackles and one sack for the Spartans.
With the season-opening win, the Spartans move to 1-0 overall on the season heading into the second week of the regular season schedule.
ROCORI will return to action on Friday, Sept. 6 when it hosts Big Lake at 7 p.m. for Parents Night in Cold Spring.
