COLD SPRING -- The ROCORI Spartans football team continued their strong start to the 2019 high school football season on Friday night.
The Spartans impressed once again to take down Big Lake 30-13 on Parents Night in Cold Spring, pushing their winning streak to two straight to open up the year.
After falling behind Big Lake 6-0 early on in the opening quarter on Friday night, ROCORI jumped out to a large lead before halftime and didn’t look back while cruising to victory.
The Spartans got on the board shortly after the Hornets scored to open the game, pushing them ahead 8-6 following a 16-yard touchdown run by Luke Humbert.
To end the first quarter, quarterback Jack Steil found Jayden Philippi for a 16-yard touchdown pass, putting ROCORI up 16-6 after the first frame.
In the second quarter, Steil completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Anderson and Brady Linn followed it up with an 11-yard touchdown run to give the Spartans a 30-6 advantage heading into halftime in Cold Spring.
Big Lake ended up scoring once more in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring, but ROCORI held off the Hornets to grab its second win in a row on its home field.
Steil finished the game throwing 12-of-16 with 118 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Spartans behind center. Linn recorded 86 yards rushing and one touchdown and Humbert tallied 66 yards rushing with one touchdown to pace ROCORI on the ground, while Philippi ended the game with five catches for 47 yards and one touchdown and Anderson added four catches for 46 yards and one touchdown in the game.
ROCORI’s defense, which forced Big Lake into two turnovers during the contest, was led by Isaac Massmann with 5.5 tackles and Humbert with four tackles.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season and will hit the road for the first time this season next Friday in Week 3 of the regular season. ROCORI will travel to take on Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in Hutchinson.
