BECKER -- The ROCORI Spartans football team fell in a close contest on the road in Becker during week six of the 2019 prep football season.
ROCORI, hitting the road after a homecoming victory over Willmar a week ago, faced off against a tough Becker squad and ultimately fell in a close contest, 14-12.
The entirety of the scoring in Friday night's game came during the second quarter for both teams, kicked off by a one-yard touchdown run from ROCORI quarterback Jack Steil to push the Spartans out in front in the first half.
Becker ended up tallying two touchdowns later on in the second quarter to put the Bulldogs up 14-6, but ROCORI answered with another touchdown run from Steil to bring the contest to 14-12 going into halftime.
In the second half of play In Becker, both teams were held scoreless in a defensive showdown between two solid squads. The Spartans had a chance to take the game in the final seconds, but couldn't convert on a field goal to ultimately fall on the road.
ROCORI finished with a total of 279 yards on offense in the game, while holding Becker to just 197 total yards on the offensive side of the ball.
Leading the Spartans offense was Steil, who went 11-for-22 with 196 yards passing through the air. He also ran fo six yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the game.
Outside of Steil, Luke Humbert finished with 51 yards rushing on 12 attempts and Brady Linn had nine carries for 26 yards. Andrew Anderson hauled in 98 yards through the air on five receptions, with Tucker Haaksonson finishing with two catches for 70 yards and Jayden Philippi adding one catch for 19 yards for the Spartans.
On the defensive side of the ball, Haakonson led the ROCORI defense with a team-best 8.5 tackles and one interception in the game. Michael Warne finished with seven tackles, while Jack Stauber had five tackles and Drew Schneider added 4.5 tackles.
With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 4-2 overall on the season heading into the seventh week of the regular season next Friday. ROCORI will remain on the road for another week on Friday (Oct. 11), traveling to take on Brainerd at 7 p.m. in Brainerd.
