BRAINERD — The ROCORI Spartans football team wrapped up their 2019 regular season road schedule on Friday night with a victory in a windy and snow-filled game away from Cold Spring.
The Spartans traveled to Brainerd to take on the Warriors in the seventh week of the regular season on Friday, coming away with a 12-6 win.
ROCORI kicked off the scoring in the first half of the contest, when quarterback Jack Steil ran for an eight-yard touchdown that gave the Spartans and early 6-0 lead.
With Brainerd tying the game up at 6-6 going into halftime, ROCORI scored what would end up being the game-winning touchdown early on in the third quarter just a few minutes out of halftime.
As the Warriors attempted to punt the ball away to the Spartans, Isaac Massmann blocked the kick and returned it 29 yards for the score that put ROCORI ahead for good.
In the game, Steil finished with 70 yards passing, as well as 50 yards rushing and one rushing touchdown, to lead the Spartans offense.
Luke Humbert tallied a team-best 65 yards rushing on nine carries and Brady Linn added 26 yards on 13 carries on the ground for ROCORI. In the passing game, Colton Baumgarten hauled in a total of 38 yards receiving on one catch, while Andrew Anderson added one reception for 27 yards.
Defensively, Drew Schneider led the Spartans with a team-high 8.5 tackles. Massmann added seven total tackles and one defensive touchdown, while Tucker Haaksonson tallied five tackles and Camdyn Bauer finished with 4.5 tackles in the victory.
With the win, ROCORI improved to 5-2 on the season while gearing up for the final game of the regular season this week. The Spartans will host St. Cloud Apollo (1-6 overall) on Senior Night at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 in Cold Spring.
